GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida softball team continued their fall exhibition schedule Sunday afternoon and picked up a 5-3 win over Florida State in front of an impressive crowd at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
The Gators jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of play against the Seminoles thanks to three hits and a trio of walks. Sophomore Kendra Falby (2-for-4) led off the game with an infield single, which was followed by back-to-back one-out walks from Skylar Wallace and Charla Echols (1-for-2). Sophomore Reagan Walsh (2-for-4) drove in Falby and Wallace via a two-RBI single through the left side of the Seminoles infield.
Florida added another run via graduate transfer Pal Egan's bases loaded RBI walk that scored Echols from third base.
The Seminoles struck back in the top of the second inning with a pinch-hit three-run home run with two outs from Hallie Wacaser.
In the circle, relievers Samantha Bender, Rylee Trlicek and Florida's defense shutout Florida State's offense for the remaining five innings of play. With runners on the corners and one out in the third inning, Bender induced a groundball to Walsh at second base who then initiated a double play that ended the inning.
The Gators struck for another run in the fifth inning to regain the lead 4-3. Walsh once again produced an RBI base hit as she scored pinch-runner Christina Wellen from second base with a line drive single off the left field wall.
Avery Goelz (2-for-4) extended the lead out to 5-3 in the final half inning of action with her RBI single to right center field that scored Wellen for the second time of the contest.
The team returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. with an exhibition against USF at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Admission is free, but the program is accepting canned goods that the program will donate to local organizations at the end of the fall. In addition, fans are encouraged to bring their own drinks and snacks.
