Meet the Gators: Chris Arroyo
Wednesday, November 2, 2022 | Baseball
Batting fifth in the 2022 Meet the Gators series is freshman left-handed pitcher/outfielder Chris Arroyo of Gurabo, Puerto Rico. The 2022 graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is in line to rep No. 47 for the Orange & Blue.
Arroyo has already seen game action for the Gators this fall. In Florida's 8-4 exhibition win over Georgia in Jacksonville, the southpaw needed just four pitches to work the Gators out of a two-out jam with two runners on base – retiring the lone batter he faced to keep the lead intact.
As a two-way talent under Head Coach Todd Fitzgerald, Arroyo helped power Marjory Stoneman Douglas to back-to-back State Championships from 2021-22 alongside current Gators teammate Jake Clemente. Over the stretch of that successful run, Arroyo went 19-1 on the mound as the Eagles posted a 58-4 record.
On top of his impressive win-loss record, Arroyo also recorded three saves, a miniscule 0.99 ERA and 169 strikeouts across 105 2/3 frames – translating to 14.4 strikeouts per nine innings. Offensively, he batted .328/.433/.581 with eight homers, one triple, five doubles, 35 RBI, 34 runs and 22 stolen bases.
Arroyo also competed for Cannons Baseball Academy prior to bringing his talents to the college game. From 2018-21, he hauled in 16 different Perfect Game All-Tournament Team honors and was selected to the 2021 PG National Showcase. On four separate occasions, he was named PG Preseason All-Region. Arroyo was tabbed by PG as the No. 7 outfielder and No. 25 player in Florida on top of being the No. 28 outfielder and No. 121 recruit nationally.
As the son of Edwin Arroyo and Sheslin Zayas, Chris has one sister, Adalis, and one brother, Derek Rodriguez. He intends to major in business management at the University of Florida.
