Meet the Gators: Salvy Alvarez
Wednesday, November 23, 2022 | Baseball
The next featured newcomer in the 2022 Meet the Gators series is freshman catcher Salvy Alvarez, hailing from Miami, Fla. The Montverde Academy graduate will wear No. 9 in Orange & Blue.
Although he primarily plays behind the plate, Alvarez possesses the athleticism to fill a variety of positions on the diamond. In Florida's Nov. 6 exhibition sweep over Stetson, he saw action at second base in addition to recording his first unofficial at bat as a Gator.
Playing under Head Coach Victor Valencia at Montverde, Alvarez helped power the Eagles to a 16-9 record as a senior in 2022. Alvarez's final prep campaign was especially strong, leading Montverde in every slash category (.526/.586/.632) as well as hits (40), runs (30) and stolen bases (11). He also added two triples, four doubles and 25 RBI while drawing as many walks (eight) as strikeouts.
Alvarez also competed for the FTB Phillies and Canes National during his high school years. Prior to bringing his talents to Florida, he was ranked by Perfect Game as the No. 7 catcher and No. 61 player in the state on top of being the No. 24 backstop and No. 379 recruit nationally.
From 2020-22, Alvarez hauled in a trio of PG Preseason All-Region Second Team honors after picking up an Honorable Mention nod in 2019. The Miami native was also named to 11 different All-Tournament Teams at PG events from 2017-20.
As the son of Harold Alvarez and Dalila Negron, Salvy has three siblings: Harold, Dalila and Sara. He intends to major in telecommunications at the University of Florida.

Salvador Alvarez ('22 FL) pops a 1.97 on this seed to 2B. Very good athlete behind dish, catch & throw and arm strength clearly on display. #Gators commit. #PGShowdown pic.twitter.com/QEqaeOOEHp
