Digging into the box this week in the 2022 Meet the Gators series is transfer outfielder Richie Schiekofer from Millburn, N.J. Following three strong seasons at Rutgers, Schiekofer will rep No. 25 in Orange & Blue.
Â
Schiekofer began his college career at Maryland in 2018, playing in 17 games including 12 starts. After his freshman campaign, he transferred to Rutgers and became a mainstay in the outfield, appearing in 108 games while making 100 starts from 2020-22. Coming off his best offensive showing as a redshirt junior in 2022, Schiekofer batted .330/.421/.464 while setting career highs with four homers, 44 RBI and 42 runs.
Â
Across three years as a Scarlet Knight, Schiekofer slashed .330/.422/.458 with seven home runs, two triples, 27 doubles, 87 runs, 76 RBI and 11 stolen bases. He also held his own on the defensive end, turning in a .991 career fielding percentage across 224 defensive chances.
Â
Going back to his prep years, Schiekofer shined as a three-year letterwinner in baseball under Head Coach Brian Chapman at Millburn High School (N.J.). He finished his career as the Millers' all-time leader in batting average (.449), hits (120) and runs scored (120) while helping the program to its first New Jersey Group IV State Championship in 2015 and later a second in 2017.
Â
As a senior in 2017, Schiekofer set Millburn's single-season batting record at .516 while hitting three homers and swiping 29 bags, earning him Essex County Player of the Year honors. He also was named 2017 All-Metro, First Team All-State, First Team All-Group IV and First Team All-Essex County. In the final at bat of his career, he hit a two-run home run to lift Millburn to a state championship victory.
Â
Schiekofer also competed for Farrah Scout during his high school days. He collected six different All-Tournament Team honors at Perfect Game events and a pair of PG Preseason All-Region accolades.
Â
As the son of Rich and Susan Schiekofer, Richie has two older sisters, Emma and Jessie. He is pursuing a graduate certificate in social media at the University of Florida.
