Kieran Smith Sets SCM 400 Free American Record

MELBOURNE, Australia – Kieran Smith broke a 13-year-old record early Thursday morning at the 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships. Smith, one of Florida's most decorated swimmers, took gold in the men's short course 400-meter free, beating his personal best in the event by over a second.

Smith is only the second American man to win the title, and the first since March 2000. His time of 3:34.38 in the event is the lowest American time since 2009.

A 2020 400-meter free Bronze Medalist, Smith notched the fifth-fastest time ever in the men's SCM 400 free event.

The 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships continue through Sunday, Dec. 18.
