WHAT HAPPENED: Graduate guard Phlandrous Fleming Jr., playing 10 minutes from where he grew up in Athens, Ga., put together his finest game in a UF uniform and along with another big afternoon from fifth-year senior point guard Tyree Appleby the Gators rolled past the Bulldogs for a road win at Stegeman Coliseum. Fleming, the 2017 Georgia Class 5A Player of the Year, went virtually un-recruited out of Cedar Shoals High, about four miles from the UGA campus. He signed with Charleston Southern and starred in the Big South for four years, but in his grad-transfer season with the Gators he'll remember Saturday when he totaled 27 points, five rebounds, four assists and drew two charges in front some 50 family and friends. Fleming finished 11 of 19 from the floor, plus four of nine from the 3-point arc, to top his previous season-high of 20 points tallied back in December against Stony Brook. Appleby added 21 points, dropping five 3s, plus seven assists. UF also got 13 points from senior guard Myreon Jones and 10 points, 12 rebounds, a career-high five assists and three blocks from senior forward Colin Castleton for the team's first time in six games with more than two players in double-figure scoring. UF, which played without starting fifth-year senior forward Anthony Duruji (ankle), built a seven-point half time lead and increased it with the first 10 points out of the locker room on the way to finishing at 51.7 percent for the game, with SEC highs in 3-pointers (14) and assists (20). Georgia was led by guard Kario Oquendo's 20 points.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Fleming's fan club made their presence known, as did Fleming, of course.
STAGGERING STATISTIC: The Gators had 12 first-half assists. That was as many or more through the first 20 minutes as Florida had posted 14 games this season. The team's 20 assists led to 31 baskets. Just as impressive? Only six turnovers, with the previous season-low being eight.
UP NEXT: Florida (18-11, 8-8) will close out its regular-season road slate Tuesday night at Vanderbilt (14-13, 6-9), which Saturday is at Mississippi State. If the Commodores, who began the day at No. 77 in the NET, so the game could be a Q-1 opportunity (if that even matters now); no worse than a Q-2. UF will wrap the regular season next Saturday at home against No. 6 Kentucky.
