GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Former Florida standout left-hander Danny Young made his Major League Baseball debut for the Seattle Mariners on Monday, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Â
As a result, Young became the 80th Gator to debut in the MLB and the 28th player to do so under Head Coach
Kevin O'Sullivan. Young is the third Florida player to reach the big leagues in 2022, following Mark Kolozsvary (April 20 – Cincinnati Reds) and Alex Faedo (May 4, Detroit Tigers).
Â
Seattle selected Young's contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, May 5 and the Boca Raton, Fla. native made his long-awaited MLB debut on Monday, May 9. Young fired 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief against the Phillies in his first-career outing, scattering three hits and one walk while striking out three batters.
Â
Â
Across parts of seven seasons in the Minor Leagues, Young compiled 280 1/3 innings with a 12-7 record, 4.43 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 239 strikeouts. He registered 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings, 3.8 walks per nine and a 2.03 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Â
Young suited up for the Orange & Blue from 2013-15, culminating with a trip to the NCAA College World Series in his final season. During his three-year career at Florida, Young made 67 appearances including 17 starts, finishing with a 10-4 record, 2.91 ERA, 117 2/3 innings and 83 strikeouts.
Young is the 12th player from the 2015Â Florida roster to make it to the MLB, equating to 34.3% of the 35-man roster from that year.
Â
The Toronto Blue Jays selected Young with the 242nd overall pick in the eighth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. Young is in his first season with the Seattle organization in 2022.
