Smith Cruises to Gold Medal on Day 6 of FINA World Championships

Kieran Smith wins gold in 4x200m free relay; Katie Ledecky advances to 800m free final tomorrow
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY – A pair of Florida swimmers played a part in the USA's gold medal in the men's 4x200m free relay on Day 6 of the FINA World Championships, as Trey Freeman swam in the preliminary session, leading to Kieran Smith securing the seventh gold medal of the week for the Gators.
Eric Friese (100m fly) and Alberto Mestre (50m free) each competed in the preliminary session Thursday morning, with Mestre advancing to the 50m free semifinals.
Men's 4x200m Free Relay
Trey Freeman swam the second leg of the 4x200m free relay during the preliminary session, splitting a 1:46.91 to notch the first overall seed in the finals for the team of Drew Kibler, Carson Foster, Trenton Julian, and Kieran Smith.
In the finals, Smith anchored the winning team after posting a split of 1:44.35 to obtain his second gold medal at this year's championships.
Men's 50m Free
In the morning preliminary session, Alberto Mestre swam the 50m free in 22.12 to qualify for the final spot in the afternoon semifinal race. In the semifinal, Mestre finished 16th after recording a time of 22.13 in the afternoon session.
Men's 100m Fly
In the preliminary round on Thursday morning, Eric Friese touched the wall in 52.39, finishing 19th in the 100m fly.
Women's 800m Free
Coming off her record-setting 21st medal yesterday, Gator Volunteer Coach Katie Ledecky continued her dominance in the water, finishing the 800m free preliminary session in 8:17.51, over seven seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Ledecky will swim for gold in the 800m final tomorrow afternoon.
Friday's prelims are set to begin at 3 a.m. ET, followed by finals at 12 p.m. ET. The finals can be viewed on NBCSports.
