Lacrosse World Games Set to Begin

Danielle Pavinelli and Haley Hicklen will each compete on the team for the first time; Amanda O’Leary, Regy Thorpe will serve as co-head coaches
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 2022 World Games begin July 12 in Birmingham, Ala. and Team USA opens its women's sixes competition with a matchup against Australia.
Current Gator Danielle Pavinelli, Florida alumna Haley Hicklen, along with the Team USA Head Coaches Amanda O'Leary and Regy Thorpe begin their journey at 3:30 p.m. CT tomorrow.
Through her first two collegiate seasons, Pavinelli has recorded 103 goals and 33 assists in 43 games played. The reigning AAC Attacker of the Year has also totaled 30 groundballs, 22 caused turnovers and 22 draw controls.
Hicklen – a 2019 graduate of the University of Florida and current assistant coach at Pitt – finished her career as a Gator with a program record 566 saves and 194 groundballs. She notched a career .483 save percentage, a 9.42 goals-against average and caused 12 turnovers.
Back in March, both O'Leary and Thorpe were named as head coaches for the Sixes Team.
Sixes is a fast-paced version of the sport played on a smaller field (70 x 36 meters), with fewer players (6-v-6), a condensed game length (four 8-minute quarters) and a 30-second shot clock.
The Sixes discipline was formally announced in May 2021 by World Lacrosse, the next step in a process that began in 2018. World Lacrosse appointed a working group to develop a version of the sport that would complement the existing box and field versions of the sport that would meet the following five objectives:

The World Games, which dates to 1982, is anticipated to feature 3,600 elite athletes from over 100 countries competing for gold in more than 30 of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Lacrosse made its debut at The World Games in 2017, with the U.S. women defeating Canada in the gold medal match in Poland.
The women's field will be comprised of Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Haudenosaunee Nationals, Great Britain, Israel, Japan and the United States.

- And, fit within the 21st Century Olympic framework, where the International Olympic Committee and Host Cities are working to reduce the cost and complexity of staging the Olympic Games
