Gators Primed for 2022 MLB Draft
Friday, July 8, 2022 | Baseball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – As the 2022 MLB Draft set for July 17-19 inches closer, several members of the University of Florida baseball team are less than two weeks away from achieving their lifelong dreams of being chosen by a Major League Baseball franchise.
The 2022 MLB Draft kicks off with the first round on Sunday, July 17 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN and MLB Network. Rounds two-through-10 will air on MLB.com beginning at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 18. The three-day event concludes with rounds 11-20 on MLB.com on Tuesday, July 19 at 12 p.m.
Broadcast Schedule
Dating back to the inaugural year of the MLB Draft in 1965, Florida has seen 212 individuals combine for 240 draft selections, including 16 first-round picks (22 counting the draft's secondary phase). Florida's MLB Draft history has been even more impressive in the Kevin O'Sullivan era, as the program's 95 draft selections and 10 first-round picks each rank second nationally.
The Gators have developed pitchers exceptionally well under O'Sullivan, producing 24 draft picks on the mound since 2008 – which ranks fourth in the country. Furthermore, 18 of those hurlers were selected in the first-five rounds – a total which comes in at third in all of college baseball. Last year alone, four Florida pitchers had their names called on draft day: Tommy Mace (Round 2, Pick 69 – Cleveland), Christian Scott (Round 5, Pick 142 – New York Mets), Jack Leftwich (Round 7, Pick 216 – Cleveland) and Franco Aleman (Round 10, Pick 306 – Cleveland).
Southpaw Hunter Barco and right-hander Brandon Sproat are the Orange & Blue's top-ranked arms in the 2022 class, coming in at No. 75 and No. 117 overall according to MLB Pipeline, respectively. Baseball America is even more bullish on the Gator duo, tabbing Sproat at No. 50 and Barco at No. 70. Additionally, right-hander Tyler Nesbitt was listed at No. 395 overall by Prospects Live, while fellow righty Nick Pogue has received draft buzz as well.
Despite Florida's gaudy track record of pitchers in the MLB Draft, the top storyline for 2022 may in fact lie with outfielders Sterlin Thompson and Jud Fabian. If either player is chosen within the first 32 picks on July 17, they would become the highest-drafted outfielder in program history – topping Gators legend Brad Wilkerson, who went 33rd overall to the Montreal Expos in 1998.
Additional Gators on the 2022 MLB Draft radar include infielder Colby Halter, catcher BT Riopelle and infielder Josh Rivera. All three players were ranked by at least one major draft publication, with Halter garnering top-500 status from MLB Pipeline, Baseball America and Prospects Live. Although Florida's group of 2022 draft hopefuls are not limited to such rankings, a complete overview of Gators earning mentions on any of the three aforementioned lists can be found below.
