GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida softball program will be well represented at the upcoming 2022 World Games that is set to take place July 9-13, at the Hoover Met Stadium in Hoover, Ala.
Charla Echols, Amanda Lorenz, Michelle Moultrie and Florida head coach Tim Walton will represent World No.1-ranked United States, while Aleshia Ocasio and Jaimie Hoover will compete for fifth-ranked Puerto Rico.
The 2022 World Games competition field consists of No.1 United States, No.2 Japan, No.3 Canada, No.4 Mexico, No.5 Puerto Rico, No.6 Chinese Taipei, No.7 Italy and No.8 Australia. The eight teams will be separated into two groups: Group A (USA, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Italy) and Group B (Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia) and both groups will play a series of preliminary round games from July 9-11, to determine placement for the semifinal and consolation games.
The top four teams to advance out of the preliminary rounds will compete in the semifinals that is set to take place July 12, with the Gold and Bronze medal games concluding competition July 13.
The semifinals and the Gold medal games will be televised on CBS Sports Network, but fans can check OlympicChannel.com for highlights from all sports throughout the 2022 World Games.
Prior to arriving at the World Games, Echols, Lorenz, Moultrie and Walton wrapped up a series of exhibitions in Columbus, Ga. and Oxford, Ala. with USA Women's National Team (WNT). The WNT picked up a pair of wins against No. 8 Australia (4-0 & 7-1), split two games versus No. 2 Japan (3-0 & 1-7) and wrapped up play with a 2-1 win over the USSSA Pride.
The World Games, which dates to 1982, is anticipated to feature 3,600 elite athletes from over 100 countries competing for gold in more than 30 of the fastest-growing sports in the world.
