Matthew Kress won his first collegiate tournament at the Georgetown Intercollegiate on Monday.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Florida men's golfer Matthew Kress collected his first career SEC Golfer of the Week award on Wednesday.
The weekly award is the second for the Gators this fall as Luke Poulter earned conference freshman of the week last week.
Kress won his first collegiate tournament at the Georgetown Intercollegiate earlier in the week and helped UF win its first team title of the season.
Trailing the lead by four shots entering the final round, Kress flipped it and won the event by four strokes. An All-SEC Freshman selection last season, he shot the lowest round of the afternoon with a 3-under 69 with five birdies for a total and tournament-leading 14. Over his 54-holes, he made 30 pars, 14 birdies and one eagle.
He was in the No. 1 spot for the third-straight tournament and is the team-leader in nearly all statistical categories: stroke average (70.7), low-36 (135) and low-54 score & par (204 & -9), average relation to 18 (-1.0) and 54 (-3.0) par, top-10 (2) and top-25 (3) finishes, birdies (49), birdies per round (4.4), under par rounds (8) and tournaments (2).
Kress has finished T26-T6-T19-1 in the four outings this season.
The Gators conclude the fall slate of the season at the East Lake Cup (Oct. 30-Nov. 1), which features the last four semifinalist teams for the NCAA Championships and featured on Golf Channel.
