
Chaney Earns Gold in Men’s 100m Backstroke at Pan Americans

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Adam Chaney secured Team USA's third-straight gold medal after swimming a 54.20 in the 100m backstroke at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. The Florida senior finished just .03 seconds in front of Ulises Saravia of Argentina.
Chaney advanced to the finals after coming in second with a 54.71 in the prelims earlier this afternoon. He was a part of Team USA's silver finish in the Men's 4 x 100m free relay, that swam a 3:14.22 in the finals heat. The senior is set to compete in the Men's 4 x 100m medley relay on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
Former Gator, Alfonso Mestre finished sixth in the Men's 200m Freestyle after swimming a 1:49.29. Representing Venezuela, Mestre placed second in his preliminary heat after touching the wall in 1:49.33. He has won silver in the Men's 400 Freestyle (3:47.62) and placed fifth in the Men's 4x100 (3:20.79). Mestre is set to compete in the Men's 4x200m free relay on Oct. 24 and the Men's 1500m Free on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
Mason Laur is scheduled to compete in the Men's 200 IM on Wednesday, October 25. The Florida junior earned gold in the Men's 200 Butterfly after clocking a 1:56.44 to come within a second of his personal best 1:55.67 in the opening day of swimming events on Oct. 21.
Top athletes from North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean's will come together in Santiago, Chile, from 20 October–5 November for the Pan American Games 2023. More than 100 direct quota spots for qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympics will be available, with swimming being one.
