Florida Slugs Past Stetson in Fall Exhibition

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida outscored Stetson by a tally of 14-4 across 15 innings of exhibition play at Condron Family Ballpark on Sunday evening.
Jac Caglianone drove in a team-high four runs en route to finishing 2-for-5 with one home run and one double. Dale Thomas (2-for-4), Cade Kurland (2-for-7) and Tyler Shelnut (2-for-7) all produced multi-hit efforts as well, with Kurland and Jaylen Guy (1-for-2) driving in two runs apiece.
Fisher Jameson, Liam Peterson, Brandon Neely and Ryan Slater all fired perfect innings on the hill in the winning effort.
Innings 1-8
After a scoreless top half of the first inning from Caglianone, the Florida offense went to work. Colby Shelton doubled in Michael Robertson after the latter worked a walk to open the scoring. Caglianone then stepped to the dish and unloaded on a two-run homer to right-center, giving the Gators an early 3-0 edge.
In a staff day for the Gators, Luke McNeillie was the first pitcher out of the pen on Sunday. The freshman righty held the Hatters in check in the second before they scratched a run across in the third on an infield RBI single by Landon Moran.
With a 3-1 lead in hand, Jameson fired a clean fourth for the Orange & Blue highlighted by two strikeouts. Southpaw Cade Fisher followed that up with a scoreless fifth inning capped off by a strikeout of his own.
Stetson evened the score at 3-3 in the sixth with a two-run frame. Jayden Hylton delivered an RBI double to left-center followed by a sacrifice fly to center field by Isaiah Barkett that plated Hylton.
Florida answered back in the bottom half, as Kurland and Shelton quickly reached base via a throwing error at shortstop and walk, respectively. Caglianone drove in both Gators on a two-run double into the right-center field gap, putting Florida back on top, 5-3.
The Hatters got one run back in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Lorenzo Meola crossed home on a wild pitch. Florida got the run right back thanks to an RBI single to right field off the bat of Robertson that brought Thomas home.
The Gators called on Neely to finish off the game in the eighth. The Seville, Fla. native worked a one-two-three inning featuring one strikeout to put the matchup on ice.
Fisher earned the victory, throwing two innings of relief with two earned runs allowed on two hits and one walk. He fanned one.
Stetson reliever Aric McAtee received the loss after surrendering two earned runs on four hits and two walks in two innings. He struck out one.
Innings 9-15
With the score reverting back to zero after eight frames, Peterson started Florida off on the right foot following the 30-minute intermission. He churned out a clean frame for the Orange & Blue, striking out a pair of Hatters in the process.
From there, Florida struck early and often. It began with an RBI single to left by Kurland in the first. Following a zero from southpaw Robert Satin in the second, Hayden Yost drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Shelnut. Guy then drove in a pair with a single to center and Kurland capped off a four-run frame with a two-run single to right.
In the fourth, Kurland reached on a fielder's choice aided by a throwing error at third base as Guy came in to score. The next inning, Shelnut worked a full count before blasting a solo shot to right field, making it 7-0 in favor of Florida.
Slater and Purnell brought the game home with scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh. In addition to Satin, freshmen Alex Philpott, Grayson Smith, and Jacob Gomberg all churned out shutout innings in the victory.
Peterson was awarded the win, blanking the Hatters across one perfect inning while fanning two. Stetson starter Jack Owens received the loss, allowing five earned runs on three hits and two walks in one inning. He struck out two.
