GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Sophomore forward Aleks Szymczyk will be sidelined for the next three months after breaking his left foot during practice Tuesday. The 6-foot-10, 250-pounder is scheduled to undergo surgery next week.

Szymczyk, from Frankfurt, Germany, was expected to provide depth in the Gators' reloaded front court that was bolstered during the offseason by the addition of a trio of transfers in Tyrese Samuel (Seton Hall), Micah Handlogten (Marshall) and E.J. Jarvis (Yale), plus the arrival of promising freshmen Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh. Instead, his recovery is ball-parked at 12 weeks, according to trainer Dave Werner, which could have Szymczyk back on the floor in late-November.
A late signee to the 2022-23 squad, Szymczyk joined the team in August and played sparingly until All-Southeastern Conference center Colin Castleton suffered a season-ending wrist injury in February.
After making just seven appearances (for only 15 minutes) over the team's first 26 games, "Shimmy" averaged 3.4 points and 2.3 rebounds over the final seven games, including a career-best performance of eight points (with a couple 3-pointers) and six rebounds over 21 minutes in a loss at Arkansas.
Coach Todd Golden's second UF team is in the final weeks of the offseason schedule and set to begin full-scale fall practices Sept. 25. The Gators open the '23-24 season Nov. 6 against Loyola Maryland at Exactech Arena.
