CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Florida swimming and diving teams kicked off their 2024-25 season with a split win against Virginia on Friday, Oct. 18 at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The No. 3 men topped No. 15 men 231-69, while the No. 3 women's fell 119-181 to the top-ranked and four-straight national champions.
The men posted 13 wins in their 14 scored swimming events, while Olympic medalist's Emma Weyant and Bella Sims tallied two first-place finishes on the women's side. Additionally, 18 Gators grabbed the second-place spot in the combined 28 swimming events.
Overall, 12 swimmers made their Gator debut, as freshman Luke Whitlock and Aiden Norman both posted their first collegiate wins in the 800m freestyle (7:47.76) and the 200m backstroke (1:51.02), respectively.
Josh Liendo and Julian Smith led the way individually on the men's side after touching the wall first in their two events. Liendo, who won a silver medal in the 100m fly at 2024 Paris Olympics, scored 18 individual points, while also being on the 200m medley and 400m free relay winning teams. Similar to his fellow Gator, Smith recorded 18 points in his two individual events, and was the second leg for both winning relay teams.
On the women's side, Sims led the way with 13 individual points, while being the leadoff for Florida's 200m medley relay team and anchor for 400m free relay team who both placed second.
Diving
Florida finished on top in all four diving events, with junior Peyton Donald and sophomore Camyla Monroy leading the way in both their respected 1-meter and 3-meter events.
Sophomore Conor Gesing followed his fellow Gator in second for both the men's 1-meter and 3-meter, while Casey Greenberg finished in third in both the women's 1-meter and 3-meter.
