Carter's Corner: HBC & McConaughey, Wilson & Webb, Napier Takes

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The last time the Gators played Texas, the Head Ball Coach did not exist and TV was barely a thing. As for the internet and social media, ha! The personal computer was decades away.
So, it's kind of a big deal the Gators (4-4, 2-3) and Longhorns (7-1, 3-1) are hooking up Saturday at Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium for the first time since 1940.
The 79-year-old HBC plans to be there.
"Getting ready for Texas,'' Steve Spurrier said this week on former Gainesville Sun columnist Pat Dooley's podcast. "I'm going on this trip. I've never been to the University of Texas. I got permission from the AD. Can't just say, 'Hey, I'm going.' I'm going with the team, part of the traveling party."
Spurrier joked that his wife, Jerri, hopes that they will bump into actor and diehard Longhorns fan Matthew McConaughey at the game.
Florida and Texas last met 84 years ago at Florida Field, and 85 years ago in Austin. So, it's been a while.
Meanwhile, plenty of non-political news as the game approaches.
Here are a few headlines of interest to Gators fans:
HEADLINE GATORS
— Sophomore Eugene Wilson III opened the season as a building block of Florida's offense. Instead, Wilson has played in only four of eight games due to injuries and his season is over following hip surgery this week. Wilson caught 61 passes for 538 yards and six touchdowns as a freshman but caught just 14 passes and one touchdown before his season-ending surgery. More from Zach Abolverdi of On3.com …
— Sophomore running back Treyaun Webb, who has missed the last four games due to injury, will undergo surgery for a broken tibia according to the report below from Graham Hall of 247Sports.com. Webb has not played since the Mississippi State game and has rushed for 93 yards on 21 carries …
— The future of Gators head coach Billy Napier has been a hot topic since the season-opening loss to Miami. Napier is 15-18 heading into the Texas game and whether you support his staying or going, the issue remains prominent in the media and on fan message boards. Here are a few of the latest headlines:
* Florida finds its footing under Napier. It should be enough to earn him a fourth year writes Mark Long of the Associated Press.
* On3.com national columnist Andy Staples offers a variety of paths for the Gators in regard to Napier's future.
* Florida played its best game of the season against Georgia, and it's still over for Napier writes Matt Hayes of USAToday.com.
