U.S. Olympic Swim Trials: Three Gators Secure a Spot in Monday Finals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Day two of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in Indianapolis, Ind., concluded with three Gators advancing to Monday Finals. Kieran Smith and Jake Mitchell have their second opportunity to secure a spot on the Olympic Team in the men's 200-meter freestyle, while Adam Chaney looks to punch his own ticket to Paris in the 100-meter backstroke.
Overall, 11 swimmers represented Florida on Sunday. Micayla Cronk, Adam Chaney Isabel Ivey, Lainy Kruger, Caleb Maldari, Josh Parent and Grace Rainey made their 2024 Olympic Trial debut. Bella Sims, Michaela Mattes, Jake Mitchell and Kieran Smith made their second trial appearance inside Lucas Oil Stadium.

Men's 200m Free Semifinals – Results
Kieran Smith, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Swim Trials Champion, used his last-turn momentum to shut it down and take it home with a first-place finish. His 1:45.39 marks his best time by over five seconds, which was the 1:50.14 he set at the 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships.
Jake Mitchell had a nice swim himself, posting his best time since June of 2023 with 1:46.43. He landed fourth to join his fellow Gator in the Finals.
Men's 100m Back Semifinals – Results
At the last Olympic Trials, Adam Chaney placed ninth to miss out of the Finals by one spot. With a shot at redemption, Chaney clocked a personal-best 53.08 to finish second in heat one and second overall. He improved his last 100m back time of 56.49 that he posted back in December of 2023.
Women's 200m Free Semifinals – Results
Swimming in the final heat of the night, Micayla Cronk finished seventh in her heat with a 2:00.00 time. She earned 15th overall to record her best Olympic Trial finish in the event.

Men's 200m Free – Results
Coming off of last night's Olympic Qualifying Swim in the 400m free, Kieran Smith secured a spot in the top-eight after winning Heat six in 1:46.77.
Similar to Saturday, Jake Mitchell swam in the same heat as his fellow Gator. He qualified to Semis after finishing ninth overall with a time of 1:47.01. The Carmel, Indiana native placed 26th in the event at the last Olympic Trials.
Men's 400m IM– Results
Josh Parent dominated heat five, cruising to first in 4:19.98. The sophomore dropped nearly a second off his previous personal-best time to finish15th overall out of 78 swimmers.
Women's 100m Breast – Results
Grace Rainey was the lone Gator who competed in the 100m breast. She swam a 33.11 in the first 50-meters to finish in 1:11.13. Rainey, who holds two top-10 women times at Florida, finished 59th overall.
Men's 100m Back – Results
Adam Chaney showed his speed by taking the top time in heat eight. The 22-time All-American clocked a 53.45 to finish just shy of his personal-best time, 53.34 to place fourth overall and qualify for the Semifinals.
Caleb Maldari tied for 29th overall after touching the wall in 55.24. The sophomore's time marks his best finish since June 30, 2023 when he set his personal-best time of 54.88 at the Phillips 66 USA National Championships.
Women's 200m Free – Results
Five Gators swam in the final event of the morning, with Micayla Cronk making noise in her debut in Indianapolis. The 11-time All-American clocked a 1:59.55 in heat four to finish 13th overall and improve from her 30th place finish at the 2020 Olympic Trials.
Bella Sims touched the wall in 1:59.66 to end 17th in an event that had 25 finishes under two minutes. She would have advanced to the Finals if one the 16 semifinalists scratched.
Isabel Ivey swam a sub-2:00 to place 24th. The former Gator posted a 1:59.94 in her 2024 Olympic Trial debut. Sophomore duo Lainy Kruger and Michaela Mattes finished 48th and 50th, respectfully.

The U.S. Olympic Swim Trials continues on Monday, June 17 inside Lucas Oil Stadium. The women will take their turn competing in the 400m IM and 100m backstroke, while the men conclude morning prelims with the first distance event, 800m freestyle. Paris qualifiers in the men's 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle and the women's 100m breaststroke, 200m freestyle and 400m IM, will be determined in the night session. Additionally, the women's 100m backstroke semifinal will also take place Monday night.
SWIMMING SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
Session Start Times (ET): 11 a.m. Prelims / 7:45 p.m. Finals (varying based on broadcast needs). The trials will have 17 sessions distributed over nine days. With eight prelims and nine finals, every individual event contested at the Olympics will have a trial.

Live coverage of the Trials will be available every night at 8. pm. ET on NBC, along with daily preliminary heats on Peacock at 11 a.m. USA Network will have same-day delayed coverage of prelims.

OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TIMES:
For individual events at the Paris Games, there are two types – Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) and Olympic Consideration TIME (OCT), per World Aquatics. Swimmers who match or better the OQT in one or more individual events, qualify for Olympic competition automatically. Participating countries may enter two (2) athletes in the same event, only if both swimmers' times are equivalent or under the OQT. The OCT threshold works differently. Should the OQT not yield a quota of 852 total swimmers, "World Aquatics will then invite athletes who have equaled or bettered an OCT, until the total quota of 852 athletes is reached."
Swimming at the 2024 Olympic Games will be held at the Paris La Defense Arena, located in the city of Nanterre. Indoor swimming kicks off July 27 and runs through August 4; in total, 35 medal events will be competed. Olympic swimming competition concludes with the men's and women's open water (10km marathon swimming) races taking place August 8-9. The full Team USA roster for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will be confirmed in July.
