Malcolm Clemons and Anna Hall Qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games
Monday, June 24, 2024 | Track and Field, Olympics
EUGENE, Ore. – Gators Track & Field tripled their number of Olympic Qualifiers on the fourth day of the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials as both Malcolm Clemons and Anna Hall earned their spot on the 2024 Olympic roster on Monday evening.
Clemons booked his ticket to Paris with a runner-up finish in the Men's Long Jump. The Oakland, California native is now set to make his Olympic debut this summer. Despite not having the Olympic standard in the event, his World Ranking is strong enough for him to join the roster.
Hall, the two-time World Championships medalist, will also make her Olympic debut in August after winning the U.S. Heptathlon Championship for the third consecutive year. She accomplishes this feat just six months after having surgery on her knee.
Other Gators that competed during Monday's competition included Gator Greats Marquis Dendy and Grant Holloway and, now a finalist for The Bowerman, Parker Valby.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Finals
Men's Long Jump
Consistent and clutch were two words that rang true as Clemons concluded the Men's Long Jump in second place. Through the first three jumps, the redshirt junior had put up marks all exceeding 7.82m/25'8" with his farthest landing at 7.89m/25'10.75". At the time, his mark was good enough for seventh place and allowed him to advance to the final three attempts.
After providing another steady jump of 7.84m/25'8.75" on his fourth attempt, Clemons had two jumps remaining to climb the leader board. He did so, slightly, on his fifth leap as he landed in sixth place with a mark of 8.05m/26'5". With the current third-place finisher sitting at 8.10m, Clemons had to throw down a jump farther than he ever had before during outdoor competition, and that he did. On his final attempt, Clemons flew to a new outdoor personal best and No. 5 UF All-Time mark of 8.18m/26'10" landing him in second place.
Dendy ended his Olympic Trial run with the eleventh-best finish in the nation, recording a mark of 7.62m/25'0".
Women's Heptathlon
After ending day one of the Heptathlon competition in first, Hall was in prime position to make her first Olympic roster with three events remaining.
She opened competition on day two in the Long Jump where the Gator Great totaled her fourth season best of the competition. Her leap of 6.19m/20'3.75" resulted in a point total of 908, increasing her overall total to 4792.
Season-best number five came in the Javelin competition as Hall's first throw landed at 45.57m/149'6". She accumulated 774 more points bringing her total penultimate event total to 5566.
With just one event remaining, Hall was in a position where if she was able to win the 800m she would make the USA Olympic roster and win her third straight U.S. Heptathlon Championship. She did just that. Cruising to the finish line in 2:04.39, Hall burst out in emotion as she knew she was headed to Paris, France. She ended the competition with a total of 6614 points.
Women's 5000m
Parker Valby concluded competition in the 5000m at Olympic Trials with a fourth-place finish. Despite missing the podium, Valby ran an incredible race finishing in 14:51.44. The time stands as a new personal best an all-time, all-date collegiate best and a new University of Florida school record.
