GAINESVILLE, Fla. – With the 2024 offseason moving into the second week of July, a handful of Gators can be found playing in summer baseball leagues across the country.
This summer, nine members of the Florida baseball team are competing as part of the USA Collegiate National Team, Cape Cod League and Valley League. Freshman All-SEC right-hander Liam Peterson is the lone Gator donning the Stars & Stripes, having been assigned to the Summer League Tour out of National Training Camp. On July 1, the rising sophomore fired four shutout, one-hit innings with seven strikeouts against Appalachian League East Select.
Regarded as the top developmental league on the summer tour, six Gators are spread throughout four Cape Cod League squads. The Harwich Mariners roster infielder Cade Kurland and catcher Luke Heyman, with the former hitting a blistering .346/.452/.423 highlighted by nine hits, seven runs and five RBI in seven contests. Heyman has played in just five games thus far, but has managed four knocks and a run scored in limited action.
Righty Jake Clemente and catcher Brody Donay are both with the Brewster Whitecaps, where the latter has already slugged two homers in nine games in addition to slashing .229/.289/.429. Meanwhile, Clemente has fanned nine batters in 7 2/3 frames to go along with a 4.70 ERA.
Incoming Texas Tech transfer Landon Stripling spent eight games on the Cape with the Chatham Anglers while Pierce Coppola tossed 3 1/3 innings for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. The southpaw struck out seven batters against three walks.
Southpaw Frank Menendez and outfielder Blake Brookins can be found in the Valley League representing the Charlottesville Tom Sox. Menendez has made a pair of relief appearances and Brookins is 3-for-8 backed by a 1.288 OPS in three games. The rising sophomore has slugged one home run and totaled three RBI, three runs and three walks.
