GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Gators open the season Saturday afternoon at home against No. 19-ranked Miami.
Florida head coach
Billy Napier on Wednesday night released the Gators' depth chart for the opener.
"That's more of an organizational chart than a depth chart,'' Napier said, noting the ongoing competition.
The most notable item on the Game 1 depth chart is that senior running back
Montrell Johnson Jr., who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery the first week of preseason camp, is listed as the starting tailback.
Johnson rushed for a team-high 817 yards a season ago.
Treyaun Webb, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Jacksonville who averaged 6.3 yards a carry on 26 rushes a season ago, is listed at the second spot.
"We anticipate Montrell being available. If he's on the depth chart at the top of this list, he's ready to go,'' Johnson said.
Meanwhile, senior defensive lineman
Desmond Watson shares the top spot at nose guard with veteran
Cam Jackson.
Napier said the Gators want to finish the week strong and then finally face the Hurricanes after a nine-month wait.
"I'm really proud of our team and I believe in our team,'' Napier said. "We've had a terrific offseason and very impressed with all phases we've been through."
