GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Former Gators star right-hander Brandon Sproat has been named the New York Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Year for the 2024 campaign.
Subsequently, Baseball America tabbed Sproat as the Mets Minor League Player of the Year after starting the season in High-A and pitching across three levels to conclude the campaign at Triple-A Syracuse. All told, the Pace, Fla. native went 7-4 with a 3.40 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 10.1 strikeouts per nine and 3.2 walks per nine across 116 1/3 innings.
This is the second-straight season in which the Mets MiLB Pitcher of the Year has been a former Gator. Righty Christian Scott took home the accolade in 2023 and debuted in Queens in May of 2024.
Sproat was also elevated to the No. 1 overall prospect in the Mets organization by MLB Pipeline.
Opening the season at High-A Brooklyn, Sproat worked to a 1.07 ERA and fanned 33 batters in 25 1/3 frames to produce an 11.7 K/9. That earned him a promotion to Double-A Binghamton, where his dominance continued: 4-1, 2.45 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 11.1 K/9, 2.2 BB/9. Sproat forced himself to Triple-A with a 13-strikeout performance for Binghamton on Aug. 2, concluding the outing by fanning 11-consecutive batters.
As the 56th overall pick in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft, Sproat pitched four seasons in Orange & Blue before beginning his professional journey. He served as the Friday night starter for the winningest team in program history in 2023 as the Gators reached the College World Series Finals and claimed an SEC Championship. Sproat wrapped up his UF career with a 19-8 record across 56 appearances (37 starts), 4.27 ERA, .242 batting average against and 242 strikeouts in 223 2/3 innings.
