GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The fourth ranked Florida men's and women's swimming & diving programs split with the No. 2/6 Indiana Hoosiers on Friday afternoon inside the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium.
The No. 4 Florida women defeated the No.6 ranked Indiana women 164-136, while the No. 4 men fell 137-163 to No. 2 Indiana.
The Gators opened the meet with back-to-back event sweeps, as both Florida A relay teams won the 200y medley relay before
Michaela Mattes and
Eric Brown followed with first-place finishes in the 1000y freestyle. Additionally, both teams won the 100y breaststroke, the 100y & 200y butterfly and the 500y freestyle. Overall, Florida grabbed the top spot in 19 events, with 12 names tallying at least one win. Seven swimmers recorded NCAA B-cut times as well.
Sophomore
Bella Sims led the way on the women's side with 27 points after winning all three of her individual events (100y back, 200y back and 100y fly) as well as was the lead off in the winning 400y free relay team. On the men's side, junior
Josh Liendo finished first in his three individual events (50y free,100y free and 100y fly) and swam the third leg in Florida's winning 200y medley relay team.
Prior to the event, Florida honored the careers of 12 Gators. This senior class has accounted for 39 All-American honors, five SEC Championships, 14 SEC titles and four national titles. Three seniors are members of the 2024-25 U.S. Swimming National Team, while one is a two-time Olympic medalist. In the classroom, this group has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll 30 times as well as have had over 10 CSCAA Scholar All-American accolades.
Florida Men Highlights:
- The men were led by Josh Liendo (50y free,100y free, 100y fly and 200y medley relay), while six other swimmers tallied at least one event win: Julian Smith (100y breast, 200y medley relay), Eric Brown (1000y free), Mason Laur (200y fly), Jake Mitchell (500y free), Alexander Painter (200y medley relay) and Jonny Marshall (200y medley relay),
- Liendo recorded an NCAA B-cut time in his 50y free (19.32), while Smith and Laur earned one in their individual event wins as well.
- The men grabbed the top-three spots in the 1000y free, as Brown placed first (9:05.02), Luke Corey finished second (9:06.96) and Andrew Taylor's 9:09.32 put him at third.
- Jake Mitchell secured four points after earning second in the 200y free with a time of 1:37.42, while Oskar Lindholm's 1:39.47 and Paul Dardis' 1:39.95 tallied a combined three points after earning fourth and fifth, respectively.
- Two Gators added to Florida's score after finishing in the top-six in the 100y back, as Jonny Marshall's 47.9 time and Aiden Norman's 48.45 time combined for four points.
- The 100y breast was led by Julian Smith's B-cut time of 53.20, while Aleksas Savickas finished fourth with a time of 54.93.
- Mason Laur came away with a first-place finish in the 200y fly after clocking a B-cut time of 1:44.73 and Joaquin Gonzalez Pinero went 1:50.11 to earn fifth.
- Freshman duo of Alexander Painter and Devin Dilger both touched the wall in 44.59 to contribute half a point each to Liendo's nine in the 100y free.
- Aiden Norman represented Florida in the 200y back, placing second with a time of 1:45.05.
- Aleksas Savickas went 1:59.66 in the 200y breast to earn second, while Peter Bretzmann's 2:01.29 put him in fifth.
- Jake Mitchell and Eric Brown went one-two in the 500y free with times of 4:23.41 and 4:25.55, respectively.
- Scotty Buff clocked a 47.52 in the 100y fly to earn second and follow Liendo's first-place time of 47.13.
- Julian Smith and Mason Laur totaled seven points in the 200y IM after Julian Smith finished second in 1:45.70 and Laur finished third in 1:47.80
- Florida's 400 free relay A team of Dilger, Painter, Buff and Smith swam a 2:56.00 to cap off the meet with a second-place finish.
Florida Women Highlights:
- Bella Sims highlighted the women's side with four total event wins (100y back, 200y back, 100y fly and 400y free relay), while nine other swimmers were a part of at least one event win: Addison Reese (200y fly, 400y free relay), Anita Bottazzo (100y breast, 200y medley relay), Michaela Mattes (1000y free), Gracie Weyant (200y breast), Emma Weyant (500y free), Micayla Cronk (200y medley relay, 400y free relay), Catie Choate (200y medley relay), Olivia Peoples (200y medley relay) and Lainy Kruger (400y free relay)
- Sims recorded three B-cut times, while Catie Choate, Anita Bottazzo, Emma Weyant and Julie Brousseau each had one.
- Michaela Mattes kicked off individual events with a 9:45.64 time in the 1000y free to earn first, as Anna Auld's 9:54.01 and Camille DeBoer's 9:58.16 were both good for top-five finishes.
- Emma Weyant, Julie Brousseau and JoJo Ramey tallied a combined nine points in the 200y free, as Weyant finished second (1:47.15), Brousseau in third (1:47.16) and Ramey followed in fourth (1:48.56).
- Sims (52.07) and Choate (53.40) went one-two in the 100y back after both recording B-cut times.
- Bottazo had a B-cut time of 1:00.63 in the 100y breast to earn first, while Molly Mayne followed the freshman in third after touching the wall in 1:03.25.
- In the 200y fly, three Gators placed in the top five with Reese leading the way in first with a time of 1:59.01. Lainy Kruger's 1:59.16 was right behind the freshman for second, while Mabel Zavaros came in fourth after swimming a 1:59.98.
- Micayla Cronk's 22.97 was good for second place in the 50y free, while Olivia Peoples finished fourth after going 23.29.
- Florida scored six points in the 100y free after Cronk's 49.56, Reese's, 50.40 and Julia Heimstead's 50.87 finished three-four-five.
- Sims recorded a B-cut time of 1:54.77 in the 200y back to earn first, while Choate went 1:59.28 for fifth.
- Gracie Weyant won the 200y breast, as the freshman clocked a 2:13.33 to finish ahead of her freshman teammate Sofia Plaza's 2;16.29, who placed fifth.
- The older Weyant, Emma, followed up with a first-place finish in the 500y free after having a B-cut time of 4:44.32. Brousseau's had a B-cut time herself of 4:44.68 for a second-place finish. Mattes' 4:52.82 time was good enough to grab the final top-five spot in the event.
- In the 100y fly, Sims recorded her third B-cut time of the day after winning the event in 52.84. Peoples followed in second with a time of 53.57, while Reese earned fourth after finishing with a time of 55.00.
- E. Weyant finished second in the 200y IM after going 1:59.37 and Zavaros' 2:03.02 put her in fifth place.
- The 400y free relay team of Sims, Reese, Kruger and Cronk led the way in the final event after putting together a time of 3:18.63.
Diving
Camyla Monroy was the only Gator diver to come away with a first-place win on Friday, as the sophomore scored a 364.50 on the 3-meter to grab the No. 1 spot, and added a second-place finish to her scoresheet after scoring 278.10 on the 1-meter.
Peyton Donald put up a fight against a very talented Indiana diving team. The junior led the way on the men's side with two, third-place finishes, while Indiana's senior duo of Carson Tyler and Quin Henniger went one-two in both diving events. Tyler was crowned the 3-meter and platform champion at the 2024 NCAA Championships, while Hinniger was runner-up in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the 2024 NCAA Championships.
