GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Former University of Florida first baseman Pete Alonso bashed his 253rd career home run on Tuesday night at Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y., making him the New York Mets all-time home run leader.
Alonso's record blast was a two-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the third inning of Tuesday night's home contest against the Atlanta Braves. The shot came on the first pitch of Alonso's second at bat of the night against Braves' starting pitcher Spencer Strider.
Alonso passed Darryl Strawberry (252) atop New York's home run chart, who finished his Mets career at the conclusion of the 1990 season. While Strawberry played 1,109 games over eight full seasons with New York to achieve his total, Alonso is only in his seventh year with the Mets (including the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign) and needed just 965 career games to break the mark – equating to 144 fewer games, nearly a full MLB season.
Presently in the middle of his fifth-career All-Star campaign, Alonso has played all 119 games for the Mets this season to lead the MLB in that respect. The Tampa, Fla. native is slashing .268/.353/.529 with 27 home runs, 29 doubles, 96 RBI and 63 runs scored.
Donning the Orange & Blue from 2014-16, Alonso appeared in 101 games including 99 starts as the Gators made consecutive trips to the NCAA College World series his sophomore and junior seasons. All told, Alonso slashed .281/.366/.427 across 551 at bats while totaling 23 homers, 34 doubles, 124 RBI and 102 runs. Prior to being selected by the Mets with the 64th overall pick in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Alonso was named a Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalist and First Team All-American.
