Rueben Chinyelu Named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week
Wednesday, January 21, 2026 | Men's Basketball
Florida men's basketball junior center Rueben Chinyelu has been named an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), awarded in conjunction with the Oscar Robertson Trophy.
The award covers the week ending Jan. 18, which includes Florida's road wins vs. Oklahoma and No. 10 Vanderbilt. Chinyelu, who also earned Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors for the same time period, tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds in the Gators' win at 10th-ranked Vanderbilt. That came on the heels of 19 points and 12 rebounds in the Jan. 13 win at Oklahoma.
The Enugwu-Agidi, Nigeria, native continued his outstanding play in Tuesday's win vs. LSU, where he posted 15 points and 21 rebounds, tying the O'Connell Center single-game rebounding record. It was also the first 15-point, 20-rebound game by a Gator since Eugene McDowell had 20 points and 21 rebounds vs. Georgia on Jan. 6, 1982. Chinyelu has rolled up four straight double-doubles, the first Gator to do so since David Lee in 2005, and is averaging 14.8 points and 11.8 rebounds in SEC play.
The USBWA also recognized John Blackwell (Wisconsin), Diggy Coit (Maryland), RJ Johnson (Kennesaw State) and Erik Platt (Stony Brook) alongside Chinyelu.
The 16th-ranked Gators return to action on their home court for a sold-out showdown vs. Auburn on Saturday at 4 p.m.
