Tuesday, January 6, 2026 | Football
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida head football coach Jon Sumrall announced the hiring of former Gator Phil Trautwein as the team's offensive line coach. Trautwein was a two-time national champion, All-SEC selection and team captain for Florida during his collegiate playing career.
Trautwein joins the Gators after serving as the offensive line coach at Penn State for the last six seasons. Over that time, the Nittany Lions are tied for second nationally with seven offensive lineman selected in the NFL Draft. In his career, Trautwein has seen 10 players get selected in the NFL Draft, including three first round picks. Additionally, over the last seven seasons at Penn State and Boston College, he has mentored 35 all-conference offensive linemen.
"Coach Trautwein is as good of an offensive line coach as there is in the country," Sumrall said. "Add the fact that he's a two-time national champion, All-SEC honoree and team captain here at Florida, having him join our staff was a no-brainer. Coach Trautwein is an elite teacher of the game and produces NFL draft picks, All-Americans and all-conference performers at an extremely high rate."
Prior to his coaching career, Trautwein was a four-year letterman for the Gators from 2004-08. He played an integral part in the program winning both the BCS National Championships and SEC titles in 2006 and 2008. Trautwein was a two-time All-SEC selection and two-time team captain as a left tackle at Florida, earning first-team honors in 2008 and second-team accolades in 2006.
"I couldn't be happier to be back home at the University of Florida," Trautwein said. "I'm grateful to Coach Sumrall and Coach Faulkner for the opportunity to win championships at the best university in the country. Let's get to work! Go Gators!"
During his tenure at Penn State, the team reached the postseason four times, including a run to the College Football Playoff semifinals in 2024.
Trautwein helped guide Olaivavega Ioane to First-Team All-America (CBS Sports), as well as First-Team All-Big Ten (Media) honors in 2025. Ioane anchored an offensive line for the Nittany Lions that saw running back Kaytron Allen rank sixth in the country in rushing yards (1,303), seventh rushing yards per game (108.6) and rushing touchdowns (15) and 19th in yards per carry (6.2).
The line also helped Allen (15) and Nicholas Singleton (13) to be the only FBS running back duo with 13+ rushing touchdowns and the first Big Ten teammates with 13+ rushing touchdowns in a season since Ohio State in 2012.
Along with Ioane, Nick Dawkins (Media), Nolan Rucci (Coaches) and Drew Shelton (Coaches & Media) earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten accolades.
In 2024, Penn State produced four All-Big Ten offensive linemen, highlighted by second-team selection Olaivavega Ioane. The offense finished first in the Big Ten in rushing (202.3 yards per game; 17th nationally) and second in fewest tackles for loss allowed (3.8; ninth nationally). The offensive line helped pave the way for Kaytron Allen (1,108 yards) and Nicholas Singleton (1,099 yards) to become the first Nittany Lion duo to each rush for 1,000 yards in a season.
Left tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu was the 2023 Big Ten Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year and a William V. Campbell Trophy finalist. He also earned consensus All-American honors, becoming Penn State's first offensive lineman to earn that distinction since Jeff Hartings in 1995. Additionally, six Nittany Lion offensive linemen earned All-Big Ten recognition in 2023, led by Fashanu (first team) and center Hunter Nourzad (second team). Fashanu (11th overall), Caedan Wallace (third round), and Nourzad (fifth round) were selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, marking the first time since 1996 that Penn State had three offensive linemen drafted and the first time since 1993 that three were taken in the first five rounds.
Fashanu, who entered 2022 with just one career start, earned second-team All-America honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation and five Penn State linemen garnered All-Big Ten recognition, led by Fashanu (second team) and Juice Scruggs (third team). Scruggs was selected 62nd overall in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, making him Penn State's highest-drafted offensive lineman at that time since 2011.
During Trautwein's second season in 2021, three more Nittany Lions earned All-Big Ten honors, led by Rasheed Walker (third team). Two linemen coached by Trautwein were selected in the 2022 NFL Draft – Zion Johnson from Boston College, taken in the first round by the Los Angeles Chargers, and Walker, picked in the seventh round by the Green Bay Packers.
In Trautwein's first season at Penn State in 2020, the Nittany Lions ranked second in the Big Ten in total offense (430.3 yards per game) and four offensive linemen earned All-Big Ten honors, including Will Fries (second team), Mike Miranda (second team), Michal Menet (third team), and Walker (third team). Fries (Indianapolis Colts) and Menet (Arizona Cardinals) were drafted in back-to-back picks in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Before arriving at Penn State, Trautwein served as Boston College's offensive line coach for two seasons from 2018-19, helping the Eagles reach a pair of bowl games.
In 2019, he guided all five starting offensive linemen—John Phillips (first team), Johnson (second team), Ben Petrula (second team), Alex Lindstrom (third team), and freshman All-American Tyler Vrabel (honorable mention)—to All-ACC honors. The Eagles allowed just 11 sacks, the third-fewest in the FBS, and 57 tackles for loss (13th nationally), while averaging 267.8 rushing yards per game, ranking fifth nationally.
In his first season coaching BC's offensive line, Trautwein mentored Chris Lindstrom to All-America and first-team All-ACC honors. Lindstrom went on to become the 14th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft as the first guard selected. Trautwein also coached Aaron Monteiro, John Baker, and Ben Petrula to All-ACC recognition.
Trautwein's coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Boston College (2013–15), followed by a stint at Davidson (2016–17).
Trautwein graduated from Florida with a bachelor's degree in Family, Youth and Community Sciences in 2007 and a master's degree in educational leadership in 2008. He also earned a master's degree in administrative studies in 2014.
Trautwein and his wife, Lindsey, have one daughter, Alexis, and two sons, Braden and Oakley.
