BELLEAIR, Fla. – The match came all the way down to the 18th hole, as the No. 1-seed Florida women's golf team fell 3-2 to No. 4-seed Auburn in the SEC Championship Semifinals on Monday at Pelican Golf Club. Florida will return to action at the NCAA Regionals (May 11-13) and learn their selection on April 29th live on Golf Channel.
The match was even throughout the first few holes as Auburn moved ahead 3-2 midway through the match and was in position for an early victory as they were 2Up in the final three matches, that were through holes 7-8-and-9. The two pairings Florida lead at the time featured Megan Propeck 2Up thru 10 and Katelyn Huber 1Up thru 10.
However, Florida didn't back down. The Gators found their stride as Siuue Wu squared her match on the 11th after being 2-Down through eight. In front of the sophomore on the course, Huber started to pull away in her matchup. The freshman won three straight holes on the 12-13-and-14 to position 4Up with five to play. In her conference match play debut, Huber secured her second win of the day, 5&3 behind a par on the par3 15th, which gave Florida a 1-0 lead.
Propeck followed Huber quicky and put the Gators up 2-0 with her 2&1 victory over No. 17 and the 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur Champion, Anna Davis. Propeck finished undefeated her in SEC Championship debut to add to a T8 (-3) performance in stroke play. In her 17-holes vs. Davis, she won four, tied 11 and only dropped two. She played 34 holes of match play today and won 10 holes, tied 19 and only lost five total.
As Propeck clinched her victory on the 17th in consecutive rounds, Wu immediately took the lead with a birdie on the 14th to go 1Up with four to play. Her opponent Molly Brown Davidson responded though taking the 15th to tie the match. As that happened Auburn secured two points with a 2&1 win by Katie Cranston vs. Addison Klonowski and 4&3 in Charlotte Cantonis against Paula Francisco.
Both the Auburn and Florida faithful gathered and turned their attention the lone match remaining between Davidson and Wu. The two tied the 16th and 17th and headed to the 18th as Davidson's birdie clinched the match.
Following the conference championship, the Gators will learn their regional assignment on April 29 at 4 p.m. on Golf Channel. NCAA Regionals are slated for May 11-13 at six predetermined locations as the top-5 teams and low individual (not on an advancing team) advance to the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. from May 22-27.
