Florida rising senior gymnast Danie Ferris made her elite gymnastics debut Sunday at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, representing Morocco, her mother's home country.
Ferris competed in the all-around, marking her first competition on all four events since her club gymnastics career. She finished with a 29.45 total, a score that did not include her vault.
Ferris stuck her Yurchenko 1.5 vault, but the score was not counted after officials ruled she began the attempt before receiving the green light from the judging panel.
Sunday's competition also represented a significant change from Ferris' collegiate role with the Gators. During her Florida career, she has competed primarily on vault and floor exercise. Although Ferris has continued to train all four events at Florida, she had not competed in the all-around since beginning her collegiate career.
The Mediterranean Games provided Ferris the opportunity to step into elite international competition while representing Morocco for the first time.
