POSTGAME NOTES
Game 9: Georgia 3, Florida 2?
?
Georgia (50-12) snapped an eight-game
losing streak to Florida (49-9) with its 3-2 victory. ?The Bulldogs? most
recent win over the Gators had been on April 15, 2006.
?
Two of Georgia?s three opponents in the Women?s College World Series have been fellow members of the
Southeastern Conference (Tennessee and Florida).
?
Georgia improved to 17-28 all-time against
Florida. The Bulldogs are now 5-3 all-time at the WCWS and 31-17 in the NCAA
tournament.
?
The regular
season series between the two squads (March 10 in Athens, Ga.) was canceled due
to inclement weather.
?
Florida dropped to 7-6 in the WCWS and to
27-23 in NCAA tournament.
?
?
Georgia junior Alisa Goler hit a two-run
homer in the first inning, her 16th of the season and third of the
NCAA tournament. ?The Bulldogs have hit a program-record 99 home runs on the
year.
?
Georgia?s Megan Wiggins reached base (hit
by pitch) for the 33rd consecutive game, but had her school-record
22-game hit streak snapped (she was 0-for-2).
?
Taylor Schlopy
scored her 78th run of the season in the first inning, tying the Georgia single-season record for runs.
?
Georgia?s Erin Arevalo threw 2.2 innings
of scoreless relief to pick up the win.? She gave up two hits and struck out
six (including the final five batters) in moving to 20-6 on the year.
?
Florida?s Lauren Heil scored on a wild
pitch in the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2. ?It was the third time in
this year?s WCWS that Georgia surrendered a run on a wild pitch.
?
Florida?s Brittany Schutte hit her third
home run of the WCWS with a solo blast to center field in the fourth inning. ?Schutte
finished the year with 19 home runs, a school record for freshman.? Her 19
round trippers were the second most in Florida history (teammate Francesca Enea
hit 20 this year).
?
Schutte went
4-for-6 at the plate in Florida?s two games today with three home runs and four
RBI.
?
Through nine
games, the WCWS field has combined for 19 home runs. ?The WCWS record of 24
home runs was set last year.??
Game 9 Quotes
FLORIDA HEAD COACH TIM WALTON
Opening
comment:
?If you
would have told me before the game started that it was going to be a 3-2 ball game
with the offensive displays of both teams out of it, I probably would?ve not
believed you. ?I thought Stephanie (Brombacher) really showed us a lot of heart
today -- really went out and gutted it out for 13 innings today and did a great
job. ?We didn?t play our best; we played our hardest. ?I thought we went out
and fought pretty heavily to the end. ?It?s just one of those things, like we
talked about two days ago, how hard it is to come back from the losers?
bracket. Anytime you?re eliminated it really hurts.?
On Florida?s two seniors:
?To end
the careers of two players, we wouldn?t have been here without those two. ?Francesca
(Enea) and Corrie (Brooks) have done just a phenomenal job with what we were talking
about in the early going. ?They?ve been to the College World Series three
times, four super regional appearances, two SEC championships, two tournament
championships and more wins than anybody else that?s suited up in this uniform.
?I?m really proud of those two; sad for those two as well. ?I?m very, very
happy with their effort.?
On the
pressure to win at Florida:
?I think
overall it?s what every coach wants. ?If you don?t want to win and don?t want
the pressure of winning then don?t come to Florida. ?There?s a lot of pressure
to win and I wouldn?t want it any other way. ?If I lose that drive, lose that
killer instinct, lose that will to work 365 days a year, I don?t want to do it
at Florida.? It?s not going to be worth it. ?I know we?ve got some great kids
coming in. ?We?ve got some great kids going out.?
FLORIDA SENIOR THIRD
BASEMAN CORRIE BROOKS
On Georgia pitcher Erin Arevalo striking out the last five batters:
?The
pitcher came in and was throwing a really good game. ?We just didn?t make the
adjustments we should?ve made. ?Her dropball was breaking really good and we
weren?t making any adjustments at all. ?I don?t think we communicated real well
with each other, such as the first person striking out going up to the next
person. ?We could?ve done something different.? We just didn?t communicate real
well.?
On her
senior season and career at Florida:
?We?ve had
a lot of great things this year and in my past three years. ?Having an
NCAA-record-winning season, four super regionals, three College World Series
now. ?It?s been a great career for me. ?Obviously, I would?ve liked for it to
end differently. ?One of our goals was to make it to the College World Series
and we made it here and did the best that we can do. ?That?s all you can ask
for.?
FLORIDA FRESHMAN DESIGNATED PLAYER/INFIELDER
BRITTANY SCHUTTE
On her
home run:
?It was a
high and inside pitch. ?It just looked good.?
GEORGIA HEAD COACH LU HARRIS-CHAMPER
Opening
comment:
?I?m very
proud of our team for coming out and fighting hard today.? It was exciting to
see everyone in the lineup get a hit, except for (Megan) Wiggins, but she got
the hit-by-pitch and scored the game-winning run off of Brianna?s (Hesson)
RBI.? It was great to have the clutch hitting by (Alisa) Goler, getting a lead
early and just the way the team battled all day.? I was really proud of the
pitchers for settling down and for Alison (Owen) giving us a strong start and
for Erin (Arevalo) closing us strong.?
On the
pitching performance from Alison Owen and Erin Arevalo:
?We are
just looking for the best combination.? The game is changing a little bit and
so it?s nice to have more than one arm to depend on.? I thought they combined
very well today.? They?re kind of opposites so it was nice to have a different
look later in the game.?
On the
team?s toughness:
?These
kids are great.? They work hard and I love them to death.? I tell them that as
often as I can and I hope they know that I mean it. ?They?re awesome, they?re
so much fun to be around every day and they are fun to coach.? It?s because
they come out and they work hard and they play with a lot of heart.?
GEORGIA SOPHOMORE PITCHER ERIN AREVALO
On closing
the game with five strikeouts in a row:
?I just
had to go in there and pitch for ground balls, pitch for getting the outs.? I
knew my defense was behind me so as long as I did what I needed to do. ?I knew
they would back me up.?
GEORGIA JUNIOR THIRD BASEMAN ALISA GOLER
On snapping
their eight-game losing streak to Florida on this stage:
?It?s
great. Florida is one of the best teams we will ever play.? We are lucky to
have them in the conference and get a chance to play them two games every year,
and of course to beat them here in the World Series in the NCAA?s. ?Props to
them for a great game.? They?re an awesome team. I really hope that their
seniors enjoyed their season; they did great.?
GEORGIA JUNIOR OUTFIELDER MEGAN WIGGINS
On how
the team reloaded offensively in the fifth inning:
?I think
in every inning we just look for sparks.? We got a leadoff walk and that really
set us off.? Basics are something that we really work on as a team. ?I think
that we do that really well, just adjusting inning-to-inning and
pitch-by-pitch. Just having sparks as a team is what we really thrive on and I
think we did that tonight.?
