Kenneth Sassaman
Kenneth Sassaman served in the US Army beginning January 20, 1953 (Fun fact: it was the same day as President Dwright Eisenhower).
After completing basic training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he arrived in Korea in June of 1953 and was assigned to the 27th Regiment (Wolfhounds), 25th Division in a heavy weapons company, heavy machine gun platoon. During the war he was stationed at "White Horse" and "Castle Rock" on the MLR until July 27th, 1953 where he saw the signing of the truce ending the fighting.
Shortly after the truce signing he was transferred to the 728 M.P. Battalion, where he spent the rest of his Korean tour in Seoul as a MP stationed at the 8th Army South Post. Returned home in November 1954. I am a charter member of the Korean War Veterans Association and a current member of KWVA Chapter 267 in Gainesville, FL.
Following his service he worked in the auto parts supply line where he owned and operated Western Auto Associate franchises in GlenBurnie and Pasadena, Maryland for over forty years.
Kenneth has been married to Mary June, my wife of 65 years and has four children, six grand-children and two great-grandchildren.
He & his wife moved to Gainesville in 2013 for various reasons, one being that they would be close to their oldest son, who is a professor at UF. He currently enjoys being a volunteer at the Catholic Charitiy food pantry and at the Malcom Randall VA hospital.
I am very proud and honored to have had the opportunity to have served my county during the Korean War.
