Matt McCall enters his fourth season at Florida, having helped the Gators to the 2013 and 2014 SEC Championships, a 2014 Final Four berth, the 2014 SEC Tournament title and three Elite Eight appearances. McCall has made an immediate impact on recruiting at UF, where he has helped secure some of the top talent both in-state and nationally for the Orange and Blue.
McCall returned to the Gators after previously working with the UF menβs basketball program while earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Florida. His hiring on April 25, 2011, came after three seasons as an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic, where he served under Mike Jarvis.
Florida has a 91-22 record (.805) during his tenure, as the Gators went 36-3 in 2013-14, 29-8 in 2012-13 and posted a 26-11 record in 2011-12.
In Floridaβs historic 2013-14 season, the Gators posted a 30-game winning streak that included the SECβs first-ever 18-0 regular season, capped with the fourth SEC Tournament title in UF history. UF earned an 11-1 record in McCallβs scouts, which notably included a three-game sweep of Tennessee, UFβs fifth-straight win vs. Florida State and an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 victory against UCLA.
During the 2012-13 campaign, the Gators went 12-3 in McCallβs scouts, which included dominant wins over Wisconsin and Florida State, a sweep of rival Georgia, UFβs SEC-clinching win vs. Vanderbilt and the NCAA Round of 32 victory against Minnesota.
In each of the Ocala nativeβs three seasons at FAU, the Owls improved dramatically. After a 6-26 record in 2009, FAU jumped to a 14-16 mark in 2009-10, but posted a 10-8 finish in the Sun Belt Conference. Finally, in 2010-11, the Owls posted the schoolβs highest win total at the Division I level, finishing with a 21-11 mark, a Sun Belt championship and an appearance in the NIT, which marked just the second postseason berth in program history. FAU posted a mid-season eight-game win streak, which is a school-best since competing in Division I.
While with the Owls, McCall developed a reputation as an energetic recruiter, helping the Owls bring in several recruits, including Greg Gantt and Dennis Mavin from the Gainesville area and Raymond Taylor from Miami. Gantt was among conference and national scoring leaders and 3-point shooters as he helped the Owls make the jump from six to 14 wins in 2009-10. In addition to his recruiting prowess, McCall focused on the backcourt and in-game adjustments and also helped coordinate coachesβ and playersβ camps throughout the year.
McCall originally joined the UF program as a student manager in the 2002-03 season and became the head manager the following year. After earning his degree in exercise and sports science in 2004, McCall continued with the program while earning his masterβs in secondary education in May 2006. McCall then accepted a position as Floridaβs director of basketball operations, which he held for two seasons from 2006-08, including UFβs second national title run in the 2006-07 season.
In total, the Gators earned two national championships, three straight SEC Tournament titles and an SEC championship during McCallβs first stint with the program. The Basketball Times has featured McCall as one of the nationβs up-and-coming young coaches.
McCallβs father, Wayne, was a linebacker and three-year letterwinner on the Gator football team from 1965-67.
McCall, 33, married the former Allison Rios in May 2012. They have one daughter, Brooklyn.
