John Barrett, Assistant Director of Sports Health, is in his eighth season as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Gator baseball program and is responsible for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of injuries. Barrett oversees the management of the baseball and softball facility athletic training rooms and also serves as the supervising athletic trainer for Florida's softball team. In addition, he serves as an Approved Clinical Instructor for the undergraduate athletic training education program in UF's Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology within the College of Health and Human Performance. Barrett sits on the UAA Medical Advisory Committee and the UF undergraduate ATEP Steering Committee. Barrett is also responsible for coordinating the recruitment and hiring of graduate assistant and intern athletic trainers for the Sports Health Department.
An Aberdeen, Miss., native and a 1997 graduate of Mississippi State University with a bachelor's degree in fitness management, Barrett also earned a master's degree in sport administration from MSU in 1999. He is a nationally-board certified and a Florida state licensed athletic trainer. He is a current member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, American College of Sports Medicine, Southeastern Athletic Trainers' Association, the Athletic Trainers' Association of Florida, the College Athletic Trainers' Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He is certified as an Emergency Cardiac Care provider and is a volunteer member of the State Emergency Responders and Volunteers of Florida State System and the Alachua Area Medical Reserve Corps.
Before moving down to the Sunshine State in July 2004, he had served as an assistant athletic trainer at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., from 1999-2004. Although Barrett's primary responsibilities were providing coverage to the Bison men's basketball, women's crew, women's lacrosse and women's soccer programs, he assisted other staff members with student-athletes competing on 26 varsity teams at eight different venues on campus.
During his time in Pennsylvania, he had athletic training responsibilities for women's basketball and softball for three seasons apiece and handled the day-to-day care of the men's lacrosse student-athletes for one season. Barrett oversaw the school's student athletic trainer work-study program and was instrumental in the development of new student policy and procedures and athletic trainer primer manuals. He also created a comprehensive sports medicine directory for use by Patriot League staffs.
Barrett previously worked as a student athletic trainer at Mississippi State University. While at MSU, Barrett served as an athletic trainer for several Bulldog sports camps and was the Baseball camp's medical director in 1998. During his graduate studies, Barrett served as a graduate assistant instructor for MSU's Health Physical Education Recreation and Sport Department, as well as an outreach athletic trainer at Starkville Academy in conjunction with the Oktibbeha County Hospital Sports Medicine Department.
His professional experiences include being selected as a volunteer athletic trainer at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., working as an athletic training intern with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League and serving as an athletic trainer on the medical team for the 1999 Mississippi State Games.
Barrett and his wife, the former Aimee Juedemann of St. Louis, Mo., reside in Gainesville. They have a four-year-old daughter named Kayla Jean Barrett.
Responsibilities: Oversees the health and wellness care of the women’s basketball team members; also will be the supervisor of the graduate assistant athletic trainer for UF’s women’s tennis team and oversee the management of the tennis, baseball and softball facility athletic training rooms.

Behind the Stats: A couple of J.B.’s other professional experiences include being selected as a volunteer athletic trainer at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and working as an athletic training intern with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League. J.B. serves as the NATA District Nine College and University Athletic Trainers’ Committee representative, as well as the NATA Liaison to the American College of Sports Medicine.  He was elected to serve as the Northeast Representative on the executive board of ATAF.  He also serves as a volunteer with the Alachua Area Medical Reserve Corp.
