GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Aimee Wagstaff (Mission Hills, Kan.) scored the first two goals in University of Florida soccer history as the Gators (1-0) opened their inaugural season with a 4-0 shutout over in-state rival Florida State Saturday afternoon at Percy Beard Stadium in front of 4,442 fans.
Wagstaff opened the scoring at 4:48 into the match with an unassisted six-yard blast into the left lower corner past FSU goalkeeper Melissa Juhl. Wagstaff followed up her eventual game-winner at 15:43 when she scored on a 12-yard shot from the right side after receiving a pass from freshman Sarah Currie (Shelby, N.C.).
Sophomore Emily Oswalt (Herndon, Va.) and freshman Melissa Pini (Plantation, Fla.) each added a second-half insurance goal to ensure the win for UF, while freshman goalkeepers Michelle Harris (Clearwater, Fla.) and Lynn Pattishall (Coral Springs, Fla.) split halves to earn a combined shutout.
"Today's game was a great soccer atmosphere and a great way to kickoff the first year of soccer at Florida," said UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh. "We were happy to get our first win today against Florida State, but we have a lot of progress to make and a lot more games to play starting with a very good team, Central Florida, tomorrow."
The Florida soccer team returns to action Sunday afternoon against Central Florida at Percy Beard Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission is free.
