THOMASVILLE, Ga. - The No. 8 University of Florida soccer team (16-1, 7-0 SEC) recorded their 13th shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over No. 10 N.C. State (11-5-1, 3-1-1 ACC) in Thomasville, Ga. It was the Gators' fifth win this season over a ranked opponent. Sophomore Melissa Pini scored two goals in the match giving her 18 on the season while junior All-American Danielle Fotopoulos scored one goal and added two assists to place her season goal total at 20.
The Gators got on the scoreboard in the first half at 22:14 when Fotopoulos fed the ball to Pini who then knocked in an 18 yarder for the score. Fotopoulos would score four minutes before halftime on a 20 yard free kick after an N.C. State foul. Seven minutes into the second half, Pini was again assisted by Fotopoulos as she netted her second goal from 17 yards out.
"I thought it was a really good win for us because it was a really hard fought victory," said Florida head coach Becky Burleigh. "It was one of those type of games where in the first half we played well. In the second half I thought we did a good job defensively in shutting them down even though they presented a lot more pressure to us," she added. "We really stepped up to it."
Florida concludes Southeastern Conference regular season play on Sunday, Oct. 27 as they face The University of Alabama at the Alabama Soccer Field in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
