Sunday, October 6, 1996 | Soccer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Florida soccer team (9-1, 4-0 SEC) earned their seventh shutout of the season with a 5-0 victory over Stetson (6-7, 3-4 TAAC) for the final match of the University Centre Hotel Shootout. Sunday's match was played in heavy rain in front of 942 fans at Percy Beard Stadium. For the third time this season, the Gator defense limited their opponent to zero shots on goal in the first half. The UF defense performed the same feat on Friday vs. Stetson and against Central Florida on Sept. 18. The Gator shot total throughout the match was 24 compared to the Hatters' four. Florida swept the round-robin tournament with two shutout victories as it defeated Old Dominion by the score of 5-0 on Friday.
Sophomore forward Melissa Pini led all scorers with two goals, scoring once in the first half on a solo breakaway and again in the second half off a Danielle Fotopoulos' assist. Florida midfielder Sabrina Thompson scored her first goal of the season at 43:20 as she knocked the ball into the net from eight yards out as it deflected off several Stetson defenders after the ball was placed in by a UF corner kick.
The second half opened with a goal scored in the fourth minute by sophomore defender Leah Bridges on a header from 10 yards out after receiving the assist off the free kick by Lisa Olinyk. The Gators' final goal was scored at 69:22 by sophomore Renee Vinnedge, her first of the season, when she netted the ball from five yards out on a second attempt after her first shot was deflected by the goalkeeper.
