LEXINGTON, Ky. - The No. 9 University of Florida soccer team (19-2) advanced to the 1996 Southeastern Conference Tournament Championship match after defeating Auburn (8-10-3) 6-1 in Saturday's semifinal match. The last time the two schools met was in last year's first-round of the SEC Tournament when Auburn defeated Florida 5-4 in penalty kicks.
Florida junior All-American forward Danielle Fotopoulos set an SEC Tournament single-match record for goals and points in a match as she scored all six Gator goals for a total of 12 scoring points in Florida's 6-1 victory over Auburn. Her six goals gives Fotopoulos the SEC Tournament record and her 15 total points combined in the two tournament matches played are also SEC Tournament records. The six goals in a single match is a personal record for Fotopoulos as her previous personal record was four goals against Alabama in 1995 when she played at Southern Methodist. Also setting SEC Tournament single match and entire tournament records was sophomore forward Melissa Pini with her three assists on Fotopoulos' first three goals.
The Gators gave up only one goal in the match when Auburn's Maggie Cauley blasted a 20-yarder at 29:31 as she capitalized on an empty net when UF goalkeeper Lynn Pattishall came out of the box to make the save on a previous Auburn shot.
Florida will advance to the SEC Tournament title game on Sunday, Nov 10 at 1:30 p.m. to face the Arkansas (12-6-2). Arkansas defeated Georgia in the first semifinal match 3-1. Both Florida and Arkansas entered the tournament as the top seeds in their respective divisions.
