ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 8 University of Florida (6-1, 3-0 SEC) earned its fifth shutout and third Southeastern Conference victory of the season as they defeated the University of Georgia (5-3, 2-1 SEC) 1-0 in front of a Georgia home record crowd of 2,259 at the Georgia Recreational Complex.
The first half was scoreless as the Georgia Bulldogs outshot the Florida Gators 7-3 in the first half of play. The second half had a change of events as the Gators limited the Bulldogs to only one shot on goal compared to the Gators nine. The Gators got on the scoreboard at 79:10 when junior All-American Danielle Fotopoulos scored on a straight center header from eight yards out. She was assisted on the play by freshman Alison Benoit. Fotopoulos, who is back after missing two-straight matches due to an ankle injury, takes over the team lead in scoring with 11 points. She is also tied for the team lead in goals scored with four on the season.
The Florida Gators return home and continue SEC play this Sunday, Sept. 29 to take on the University of Tennessee. The match will be played at Percy Beard Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission is free. This will be the first ever match played between the two schools as Tennessee is in their inaugural season of play.
