Gators Advance To Second Round of NCAA Tournament

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ‑ In a re-match of last week's Southeastern Conference title match, the University of Florida soccer team (20-2-1) defeated Vanderbilt(14-8) 3-2 Saturday in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 1,036 to advance to the second round of the 1997 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
All three Gator goals would come from the Gator offensive trio of Andi Sellers, Sarah Yohe and Melissa Pini.
As in last week's match, the Gators took an early 1-0 lead when Andi Sellers scored her 23rd goal of the season off a double assist by Kerri Doran and Sarah Yohe. The half would end with the Gators up 1-0.
Yohe put the Gators up 2-0 with an 8-yard shot with an assist from Sellers at the 53:31 point of the second half. Melissa Pini gave the Gators the 3-0 advantage off a cross from Katie Tullis at the 76:21 point of the second half.
The Commodores would fight back with a 9-yard goal by Austa Helgadottir with goalkeeper Michelle Harris out of the box to cut the UF lead to 3-1 with less than 15 minutes remaining in the match.
The Commodore's leading scorer, Laura Koerner, would make the score 3-2 with an assist from Helgadottir at the 82:52 point of the second half. The Gators held on to the 3-2 final, out-shooting the Commodores 37-6.
Florida advances to the second round to face No.1 seeded and defending champion North Carolina, who defeated Wake Forest 6-0 this afternoon. The Gators will face UNC for the second time this season on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at UNC's Fetzer Field. The Gators lost to UNC 2-1 to open the 1997 campaign.
