Florida Gymnastics Team Finishes Fifth At NCAA Championships

The University of Florida women's gymnastics team posted its highest national finish since 1985 by finishing fifth Friday in the NCAA Championships' team finals, commonly referred to as the "Super Six". The Gators posted a season-best and the second-highest team score in school history Friday of 196.425, just missing a spot on the award's stand. UCLA won its first NCAA team title with a total of 197.15, while Arizona State was runner-up at 196.85. Georgia took third overall at 196.60, while pre-meet No. 1 seed Michigan was fourth (196.50). Nebraska took sixth a 195.25. A Stephen C. O'Connell Center crowd of 6,718 witnessed the event.
The Gators opened the meet with a solid uneven bars set, earning a team total of 48.90. Florida was led on the event by junior All-American Sybil Stephenson's 9.85. Senior Chrissy Vogel and freshman Jaime Graziano also recorded 9.80+ scores on the bars for UF, earning marks of 9.80 and 9.825, respectively.
Florida was impressive on its next event, the balance beam, earning the second-best total of any team of the evening on the event (49.225). That team total is also the Gators' 1997 best on the beam. All but one Gator earned marks of 9.80 or better on the beam Friday. Florida was led on the event by sophomore Susan Hines' and Erika Selga's marks of 9.875 -- both collegiate-bests. Junior Kourtney Gallivan recorded a collegiate-best 9.85, while Graziano and sophomore Trisha Lolli earned scores of 9.825 and 9.80, respectively.
Three gymnasts shared UF high score honors on the floor exercise, as the team posted a total of 48.975. Freshman Chrissy Van Fleet, Hines and Selga each earned scores of 9.80 for UF.
Florida finished the meet on the vault, were it earned its season-best total of 49.325. Van Fleet earned a collegiate-best score of 9.95 for the vault to lead UF, while Hines and Vogel also turned in scores of 9.90.
