Gator Soccer Team Defeats Georgia 2-1 in OT

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The No. 5 University of Florida women's soccer team defeated the University of Georgia 2-1 in sudden-death overtime Sunday in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 2,098. UF is now 5-0, 2-0 in the SEC, while Georgia fell to 3-2, 0-2 in the SEC. Florida's 5-0 start for the 1998 season ties the program's best start ever.
Junior Sarah Yohe's first goal of the 1998 season was the game-winner for UF, scoring off a low volley from Melissa Pini's cross. Florida senior All-American Danielle Fotopoulos scored the game's first goal, hitting an eight-yard shot off the assist from senior Adrianne Moreira at 4:42. Georgia's Stephanie Yarem had a nine-yard header at 49:21 to tie the match in the second half.
Florida goalkeeper Meredith Flaherty had three saves in earning the win. Georgia's Nicole Williams tallied seven saves. The win was Florida's third overtime victory of the year and marked the second time in the five-match UF-UGA series that the game was extended beyond regulation. The first UF-UGA match in 1995 ended in a 0-0 tie.
Next up, the Gators play host to No. 14 Hartford on Saturday, Sept. 19. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at the Percy Beard Stadium and admission is free.
