ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 8 University of Florida gymnastics team fell to No. 1 Georgia 196.875-192.075. Friday evening in front of a Stegeman Coliseum crowd of 9,418. The Gators trailed No. 1 Georgia by just .45 of a point after two events, but falls and an injury to UF senior Susan Hines during the floor exercise proved costly to UF in the final two events.
Hines sprained her left knee during her floor exercise's routine final tumbling pass. UF team doctors will examine her when the team returns to Gainesville. Hines, the two-time defending NCAA vault champion, is a six-time All-American for the Gators.
Georgia gymnasts swept the meet's event titles, as senior All-American Karin Lichey won the all-around with the nation's season-best total of 39.825. UF's Chrissy Van Fleet was runner-up in the all-around with a 38.80. Lichey used 10.0 marks to win both the vault and floor titles, plus claimed balance beam top honors with a mark of 9.875. UGA senior Jenni Beathard also posted a 10.0 to win the uneven bars crown.
Florida opened the meet with an impressive performance on the uneven bars, as the Gators' first three performers posted collegiate-best marks and the next three earned season-best scores. Florida upped its season-best bars team total by over half a point, posting a total of 49.125. Van Fleet, who took third overall with a season-best mark of 9.90, led the Gators on the event.
The Gators then moved to the vault, where they posted a season-best team vault team total of 48.775. Freshmen Lisa Geckle and Hilary Thompson posted collegiate-best marks of 9.675 and 9.75, respectively. Senior Susan Hines posted UF's top score for the event, taking third overall with a 9.875.
Trouble began for the Gators on their third event, the floor exercise. UF was forced to count two out-of-bounds deductions and one fall toward its team total of 48.25. Thompson, who posted a collegiate-best mark of 9.85, led UF on the event.
The Gators fielded just five competitors in its balance beam lineup since Hines was unable to compete due to the knee injury she suffered during her floor exercise routine. UF struggled on the event, as the Gators were forced to count five falls toward their season-low team beam total of 45.925. Junior Maryann Esposito and Thompson led UF on the beam with marks of 9.75.
