Florida Soccer Team Defeats FIU 8-0; Yohe Sets Consecutive Matches with Goal Record
Sunday, October 3, 1999 | Soccer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 2 University of Florida soccer team upped its 1999 record to 11-0, matching the best-ever start in the five-year history of Gator soccer, with its 8-0 win over Florida International Sunday afternoon in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 1,147. The Gators' 11-0 record matches the best-ever start for the Florida program, which was set by the 1998 team.
Senior captain Sarah Yohe (Maitland, Fla./Winter Springs) set the Gators' record for goals in consecutive matches by scoring twice against FIU, marking her ninth consecutive match with a goal. Yohe struck quickly for the Gators, hitting a six-yard shot to the upper right corner just 58 seconds into the match. She also hit the first goal of the second half at 47:59, scoring off another six-yarder to the near post. Sunday's performance was the fourth multi-goal performance by Yohe this season.
"I think a lot of it should be credited to her hard work. She is in the right place at the right time," UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "She committed herself this summer to get match-fit and that is allowing her to make more runs and get on the end of balls that she wasn't able to get on the end of last year."
Florida also got two goals each from sophomores Abby Wambach and Jill Stevens. Wambach's first goal came at 51:02 when Heather Mitts sent the cross into the box, which was touched by Andi Sellers to Wambach, who was running at full speed and headed it in from six-yards out. She also scored the next goal for the Gators at 58:47. Mitts again sent the cross in from the far corner, which Yohe flicked to Wambach for another six-yard shot.
Stevens scored the final two goals for the Gators, putting in the rebound off Erica "Boo" Schubert's free-kick shot at 78:29. She scored her second goal at 86:13, putting in her own rebound from three-yards out.
Sellers, who returned to the UF lineup this weekend after a bout with mononucleosis, scored UF's second goal at 2:15, putting in a seven-yard shot to the lower right corner of the goal. Freshman Kara Rao scored her first goal of the season Sunday, hitting a 20-yarder from the center of the field.
UF redshirt freshman Jordan Kellgren, making her first start in goal, recorded one save. She was replaced early in the second half by Regan Wiesemann, who turned in four saves for UF. FIU goalkeeper Julie Rehberg recorded 10 saves Sunday afternoon. For the match, the Gators outshot the Golden Panthers 34-8.
"I think what happened is that we scored the two quick goals and we became a bit lackadaisical as far as making the runs and as far as doing the things that create scoring opportunities," Burleigh said. "At halftime, we said that we need to pick up that end of it and the opportunities are going to occur."
The Gators begin a challenging six-match road stretch next weekend. UF meets No. 10 Virginia on Friday, Oct. 8 and No. 13 Hartford on Sunday, Oct. 10.
