No. 3 Gator Soccer Team Defeats Vanderbilt 3-1

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A three-goal second half led the No. 3 University of Florida women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Southeastern Conference rival Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 2,143. The Gators now move to 6-0, 2-0 SEC this season, while Vanderbilt drops to 2-4, 0-2 SEC.
The Gators were trailing early when VU's first shot of the match found the back of the net. Kim Szurouy took a pass from Katie Stegall and fired a 12-foot shot from the right side to the far post at the three-minute mark of the opening half. Szurouy's goal was the only scoring of the opening half.
Each member of Florida's frontline recorded a goal Sunday. Sophomore Abby Wambach gave the Gators the equalizer at the 47:21 mark, hitting a 25-yard center shot through VU's goalkeeper Jessie Wolfe's outstretched hands. Senior captain Sarah Yohe got the go-ahead goal at 56:50, taking the pass from Jill Stevens to hit a 20-yard curler to the far post. Sophomore Andi Sellers finished off the Gators' scoring at 85:39, one-touching the ball before hitting a 12-yard shot to the left post.
"In the first half, I think we dragged a bit. We need to find ways to get ourselves out of that mode without having to go to the locker room to do it," UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "Once we came out of the locker room, I thought we did a great job. We won the first ball, won the second ball and when you win the first and second balls, it changes the whole flow of the game."
For the match, Florida out-shot Vanderbilt 27-6. UF goalkeeper Regan Wiesemann had no saves. VU's Wolfe turned in four saves in 67 minutes of play and replacement goalkeeper Lizzy Johnson also posted four saves.
Next up, the Gators travel to State College, Pa., to meet No. 5 Penn State on Friday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.
