The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams were both victorious in their opening meets of the millenium against the University of Alabama at the O'Connell Center Natatorium on Tuesday afternoon. The women (7-1, 2-1 SEC) won, 161-131, while the men won by the same 30-point margin, 157-127. The meet was the final home meet of the season for the men's team.
The women were led by freshman Mary Beth Mounce (Plano, Texas/ Plano Senior) who won the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 58.36. She also won the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 2:07.88.
Junior Alex Lopez (Naguabo, P.R./ Bolles School) paved the way for the men, taking first in two events himself. Lopez took the 100-yard butterfly in 49.79 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.91.
"We raced exceptionally well and won the close races," said Florida head coach Gregg Troy. "I would like to see us a little bit faster, but we still have six weeks until the conference meet.
The women's team will return to action on Friday, when it plays host to Illinois in its final home meet of the season. The meet at the O'Connell Center Natatorium begins at 5:00 p.m. The men's team will not swim until Jan. 22, when it travels to third-ranked and defending national champion Auburn for a 2 p.m. meet.
