Florida Finishes Opening Weekend of SEC Play with 2-0 Win Over Georgia
Sunday, October 1, 2000 | Soccer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida soccer team completed its opening weekend of Southeastern Conference play Sunday with a 2-0 win over Georgia in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 1,285. The win evens the Gators record to 6-6 overall, 2-0 in the SEC, while UGA drops to 6-5-1, 1-1 SEC.
The Gators scored one goal in each half, with both goals coming off headers. Junior Andi Sellers got the first goal at 39:10, heading in a cross from deep in the corner from freshman Kelley Visentin.
"All day, they (the UF coaches) were talking about making the near post run and to make sure when we got there to cut off the defender or the keeper," Sellers said. "Sometimes we weren't there and sometimes we were there and the ball didn't get there. That was a situation where the runner was there and the ball was there - it was just really good timing."
Sellers also contributed to UF's second goal, sending in the cross from the right side, which junior Abby Wambach headed in from eight yards. The goal and assist by Sellers Sunday ups her season totals Gator season highs of seven goals, five assists for 19 points.
For the match, the Gators outshot the Bulldogs 27-9. UF goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren turned in five saves for the match, while UGA's Nicole Williams posted 13 saves.
"Well, we are happy with the two shutouts, certainly. We are never going to complain about a shutout," UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "Although we had two shutouts, we are going to focus a lot on defense this week in practice."
Next up, the Gators travel to Lexington, Ky., to meet No. 12 Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
