Gator Soccer Defeats Vanderbilt 1-0
Sunday, October 8, 2000 | Soccer
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – One goal was all the University of Florida soccer team needed to defeat Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon in front of a VU Soccer Complex crowd of 300. The 1-0 win ups the Gators' overall record to 8-6 and 4-0 in the Southeastern Conference, while VU fell to 6-6, 3-2 SEC.
Freshman Crystal Frimpong hit her first collegiate goal at 23:19 for the only score of the match. The set up for the goal was started by a Danielle Murphy corner kick. Junior Andi Sellers got a shot off and the deflection ended up in front of Frimpong, who hit the short shot to the middle of the goal.
"I hardly remember the goal," Frimpong said. "Abby (Wambach) got the ball back to me and I got a little chop on it and then I just kicked it in."
For the match, Vanderbilt edged the Gators in shots 12-11. UF goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren turned in five saves, while VU's Stacee Sproul posted four saves.
"I'm pleased with the win, but I'm not pleased with the way we played. This field really slows the game down a lot, but we slowed ourselves down a lot too," UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "It's great getting the shutout, getting an SEC win – those are all positives, but I wasn't happy with our lackluster play."
The Gators continue their stretch of SEC road matches next Friday when they meet Mississippi State on Friday, Oct. 13 in Starkville, Miss., at 5 p.m. (ET).
