Texas A&M Defeats Florida Soccer 3-1

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 7 Texas A&M soccer team claimed a 3-1 win over Florida on a soggy Sunday afternoon in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 1,097. The win ups the Aggies record to 4-2, while the Gators drop to 2-4 for the season.
Sophomore Andrea Starns hit both Aggie goals during the opening half. She got A&M on the board early at 1:29, scoring off a six-yard volley. Starns scored again at 40:11, hitting a 22-yard blast to the center of the goal.
Florida's Andi Sellers got her fifth goal of the season at 59:30, hitting a short header sent in off another header from freshman Casey Hamel. The dark clouds that hung over the field for most of the match finally began to release the rain, as the final 20 minutes of the match were played in rain showers. The Aggies finished off the scoring for the match at 78:40 when Heather Ragsdale put in a rebound that slipped out of UF goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren's hands.
For the match, A&M outshot the Gators 16-12. Kellgren posted four saves for the Gators, while A&M's goalkeeper Esther Thompson turned in eight saves.
"In the second half, I think we had a lot of chances – a lot of good chances," Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "I think when they scored their third goal that took a bit of a mental toll on us because it shifted the momentum. But even after their third goal we still had some chances. I think that the momentum was on our side the second half. But one half is not good enough – one half is 45 minutes and this is a 90-minute game. We've got to play 90 minutes."
Next up, the Gators will play host to the UF Fall Invitational next weekend. UF opens the event on Friday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. vs. No. 15 Southern California. Florida then meets Brigham Young on Monday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. In addition, Central Florida will meet Southern California on Sunday, Sept. 17 at noon at the Percy Beard Stadium.
