UF Swimming and Diving Wins Two Meets

The Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams, ranked 10th and seventh respectively, each won two meets on Friday afternoon. The men's team defeated Indian River Community College by a score of 181-117 and Florida Atlantic 208-88. The women's team won its meet against Indian River 195-96 and defeated Florida Atlantic by a score of 195-90.
The women's swimming and diving teams were led by double winner Sara McLarty (Deland HS) who won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:51.71 and touched the wall in 2:05.13 to win the 200-yard backstroke. Sophomore Laura Cross (Pompano Beach, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) posted a winning time of 10:05.14 in the 1000-yard freestyle, freshman Janelle Atkinson (Jamaica/The Bolles School) won the 100-yard backstroke in the time of 59.73 and freshman Cerian Gibbes (Trinidad/The Bolles School) touched the wall in 1:06.51 to win the 100-yard breaststroke. Also posting victories for the Gators was senior Leah Martindale (St James, Barbados/St. Michael School) who won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.28, freshman Rebekah Olsen (Portland, Ore./Westview HS) posted a winning time of 53.44 in the 100-yard freestyle, and sophomores Diane Tennison (Lafayette, La.) won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:05.26 and Katie West (Springfield, Oh./ Catholic Central HS) won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:07.50. The divers were just as successful as senior Robyn Grimes (Pennington N.J./ Hopewell Valley Central H.S.) won the one-meter springboard and freshman Nicole Bolt (Orlando/Dr. Phillips H.S.) won the three-meter springboard.
The men's team had first place finishers in 10 of the 16 men's events in the meet. Senior Ricardo Monasterio (Caracas, Venezuela/Institutos Educ. Asociados) won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:18.44. Junior Eric Donnelly (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney) came in first in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:53.05. Donnelly also won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:55.16. Freshman Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil/Annapolis) won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.82, while senior Greg Reeves (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) won the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 4:37.15. Junior Duncan Sherrard (Lakeland, Fla./Bartow) won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.47. The men's team won both of the diving events, with junior Reggie Coote (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Western) winning both the one-meter and three-meter springboard events.
The women improve their record to 10-2 on the year, while the men are now 8-4. Both teams will return to action Saturday, Jan. 26, when they travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to swim against Miami. The Gators will return home Feb. 3 when they host Tennessee in SEC action.
