Swimming and Diving Wins At Miami

The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams, ranked 10th and seventh respectively, defeated the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday. The men's team defeated Miami 131-87, while the women won by a score of 138-101.
The men's team won nine of the 13 events swam in the meet. The Gators were led by senior Ricardo Monasterio (Caracas, Venezuela/Institutos Edu. Asociados), who won both the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard free. Monasterio swam a time of 9:19.96 in the 1,000 free and 4:35.94 in the 500 free. Freshman Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil/Annapolis) swam a time of 1:43.04 in the 200-yard freestyle to take first place in the event. Junior Jim Kostowicz (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary) won the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 21.53. In the 400-yard individual medley, sophomore Matt Yacco (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) won the event with his time of 4:07.06. Junior Duncan Sherrard (Lakeland, Fla./Bartow) won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.75, while sophomore Ricardo Molari (Westport, Conn./Bolles) won the 100-yard free with a time of 47.00 and junior Mike Jansen (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) came in first in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:50.15.
The women's swimming and diving teams were once again led by freshman Sara McLarty (Deland HS) who was a double winner for the Gators. She won the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:21.74 and the 500-yard freestyle in a collegiate best and provisional qualifying time of 4:51.45. Also posting a double win for Florida was senior Sharon Rzadkowolsky (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep). She won the 1650-yard freestyle in time of 16:57.10 and the 1000-yard free in a time of 10:11.11. Also posting a victory was freshmen Janelle Atkinson (Jamaica/The Bolles School) who touched the wall in 2:05.07 to finish first in the 200-yard butterfly and Cerian Gibbes (Trinidad/The Bolles School) touched the wall in 2:19.91 to win the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Mary Beth Mounce swam a 2:05.01 to win the 200-yard backstroke and senior Leah Martindale (St James, Barbados/St. Michael School) who won the 50-yard freestyle for the second straight day in a time of 24.21
