UF Swimmers Compete Against Auburn in SEC Action

AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Florida men's and women's swimming teams, ranked tenth started off the 2001 portion of their schedule with a SEC dual meet at Auburn University. The men and women both dropped their first meet of 2001. The women fell by the score of 137-106 and the men dropped their meet by the score of 131-110.
The women were led off the competition on Thursday at the University of Georgia. They claimed the top with three spots in the one-meter and three-meter platform diving events. Senior Robyn Grimes (Pennington, N.J./ Hopewell Valley Central High School) won both diving events for the Gators. She gained an automatic qualifying score in both diving events. She scored 265.20 points in the one-meter platform and 327.40 in the three-meter platform. Freshman Janelle Atkinson (Jamaica/The Bolles School) was a triple winner for the Gators in the pool. She got the Gators first win in the swimming events in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:41.77 minutes, a new collegiate best. In the very next event she added to her victory total with a first place finish in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:47.73, also a new collegiate best and just missing an automatic qualifying standard, but gaining a provisional qualifying time. She capped her evening by winning the 500-yard free in a time of 4:44.28, also an automatic qualifying time.
Junior Hank Richardson (Houston, Texas/Memorial H.S.) won both the one-meter and three-meter platform diving events for the men. He scored 297.75 in the one-meter and 309.30 in the three-meter. His score of 297.75 is an automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA. Also posting double wins for the Gators was freshman Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil/Annapolis). He won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.18 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle finishing in a time of 44.56. Senior Ricardo Monasterio (Caracas, Venezuela/Institutos Edu. Asociados/IRCC) got the Gators first win in the pool with a first place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle finishing in a time of 9:11.27 minutes in the second event of the evening. He also posted a winning time of 4:30.12 in the 500-yard freestyle. Also winning was for the Gators was senior Bryan Kim (Songpa, South Korea/ Yanjae) in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:54.20.
The Gators return to the pool on Saturday morning when they swim against Arizona State in dual meet action. The meet will be at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center in Auburn, Ala.
